This is an invited talk, "Ages of Nihilism and Renewal in Nietzsche’s Birth of Tragedy" given to the Pell Honors Program students at Salve Regina College in 2014. In it, I set out some of the key ideas and movements of Nietzsche's early work, the Birth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Music, discuss how he goes beyond the Dionysian-Apollonian distinction to focus on critique of the "Socratic" turn in culture, and reflect upon what the meaning this text might hold for us...
